Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Legendary Album Covers

I came across something on Aoxo's wikipedia page that pointed out that on Aoxo's album cover, the words "Grateful Dead" also says "WE ATE THE ACID" it also says a 5 yr old Courtney Love is pictured on the back. Tried to google some verification and it led me to some other cool facts about album covers like on the "American Beauty" cover "Beauty" can be read "Reality", and that From The Mars Hotel cover upside down reads "Angry Rumors" I dont see that one personally but I think the subject is VERY COOL.

Is this something that's been covered in the forums already or is there a web site that has compiled all these cool hidden gems?

Courtney Love, the daughter of the Dead's first "manager", Hank Harrison, is on the back cover of Aoxomoxoa. She sits by Pigpen, (of all people)... about three or four years old..
I bought the album "Mars Hotel" when it was released in 1974, and it does in fact read "Ugly Rumors" in Martian. Just "Google" the albums and see the art for yourself.

I find this way more trippy and out there than any cover artwork. Ugly Rumors and we are truly everywhere....

Hey bluedevil: I'm sure you already have his web site, but for others:

It's a great resource.

I always thought it was a pun too: "Ugly Rumors" = "Ugly Roomers." The denizens of the Mars Hotel, that is....

Release in June 1974, the "Ugly Rumors" were already spreading that the band wanteed to stop touring--that it was in trouble.

Harrison got booted from the band's inner circle, ironically, around the same time. At primary issue was Harrison's book on the band, The Dead: Vol 1: A Social History of the Grateful Dead (1973) which not only ruffled some feathers but carried a small notice in the back of bootleg Dead cassettes for sale.

Incidentally, "Ugly Rumours" was the name of a band featuring the egregious Anthony Blair, before his entrance into UK politics.

The Courtney Love thing has been touched upon, but I can't say whether the other album stuff has been covered:
